Course Information

This course provides hands-on training in basic rigging techniques, equipment selection, and safe load movement under crane operations. Training reflects current industry standards and Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation. You’ll learn how to:

• Select, inspect, and use basic rigging gear including slings, shackles, chains, hooks, and lifting devices
• Interpret lift plans and job safety documentation
• Identify hazards associated with rigging activities and apply risk control measures
• Attach, move, and release loads safely
• Use standard hand signals and communication methods
• Work safely alongside crane operators, doggers, and site personnel
• Conduct pre-use inspections and identify faulty equipment
• Respond appropriately to load instability or unexpected incidents
• Follow emergency procedures and site safety requirements

By the end of the course, you’ll be confident performing basic rigging tasks safely, efficiently, and in compliance with workplace regulations.
 

Training Delivery & Assessment

Due to the high-risk nature of rigging work, this course is delivered entirely face-to-face over four full days.

Training includes:

• Practical rigging tasks in a controlled environment
• Knowledge-based assessments
• Direct observation by a licensed assessor

Assessment is competency-based and aligned with high-risk licensing requirements.


High Risk Work Licence Information

Upon successful completion, participants are eligible to apply for a High Risk Work Licence (HRWL – Basic Rigging) through the relevant state regulator.

Important information:

• High Risk Work Licences are valid for 5 years
• Licences must be renewed via WorkSafe QLD or WorkSafe WA
• If a licence expires, you are not recognised as a licensed operator
• A 12-month grace period applies after expiry
• If this period is exceeded, both written and practical assessments must be completed again
• A Verification of Competency (VOC) cannot be completed on an expired licence
• You have 60 days from course completion to lodge your licence application
• Summit Training can submit the licence application on your behalf for an additional $100 fee

Entry Requirements

There are no formal prerequisites. However, students must:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Provide valid photo identification
• Wear steel-capped safety boots and required PPE
• Have basic computer skills and internet access
• Demonstrate sufficient language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills
• A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) - if you don’t have one, you can apply at usi.gov.au or we can assist

Eligible apprentices, trainees, workers, and business owners within WA’s building and construction industry may receive subsidies of up to 70% (metro) or 80% (regional) per course. As an approved bulk-billing provider, Summit Training manages the funding paperwork and claims process - meaning you only pay the remaining gap fee while completing your training.
